IKO vs GAF vs CertainTeed vs Owens Corning: Roof Warranties Compared (2026 Georgia Homeowner Guide)
Last updated: September 2026 · Written by Ridgeback Roofing, Warner Robins, GA
The short answer
All four major shingle brands (IKO, GAF, CertainTeed and Owens Corning) sell architectural shingles with a limited lifetime warranty. In practice, the most important number is the non-prorated period, the years when the manufacturer pays the full cost of replacing defective shingles. The standard non-prorated period is about 10 to 15 years, depending on the brand and shingle line.
Every brand also has enhanced warranties that stretch that coverage much further, but only when the roof is installed by a contractor in the manufacturer’s certification program and with the required accessories. The biggest difference between the top tiers is whether the manufacturer also covers the installer’s workmanship.
Side-by-side comparison
| Brand | Standard warranty (any installer) | Enhanced warranty | Who can offer it | Manufacturer covers workmanship? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKO | Limited lifetime; 15-year Iron Clad Protection on Dynasty and Nordic (10 years on Cambridge) | Extended Iron Clad Protection: up to 25 years non-prorated | IKO ROOFPRO Select or Craftsman Premier contractors | No. The contractor provides workmanship coverage |
| GAF | Limited lifetime; 10-year Smart Choice Protection | System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge: up to 50 years non-prorated on materials | GAF Certified (System Plus), Certified Plus (Silver), Master Elite (Golden) | Silver Pledge: 10–15 yrs; Golden Pledge: 25+ yrs |
| CertainTeed | Limited lifetime; 10-year SureStart protection on most lines | SureStart PLUS 3-, 4- and 5-Star: up to 50 years non-prorated | CertainTeed-credentialed contractors (higher tiers require higher credentials) | 4-Star: 15 yrs; 5-Star: 30 yrs |
| Owens Corning | Limited lifetime; 10-year TRU PROtection on most architectural lines | System, Preferred and Platinum Protection: up to 50 years non-prorated | Owens Corning Preferred or Platinum contractors | Preferred: 10 yrs; Platinum: 25 yrs |
Terms summarized from each manufacturer’s published warranty documents as of 2026. Warranties change, and exact terms depend on the shingle line and accessories used, so always read the warranty itself.
Brand by brand
IKO
IKO’s Iron Clad Protection period is its non-prorated window. It’s 15 years on Dynasty, Nordic and IKO’s other premium shingles, and 10 years on Cambridge. When an IKO ROOFPRO Select or Craftsman Premier contractor installs the roof with at least three IKO PROFORMAX accessories and registers it within 90 days, the homeowner can get Extended Iron Clad Protection. That extends the non-prorated coverage to up to 25 years, for a $75 processing fee. The extended warranty covers the materials, not the contractor’s workmanship. You need a solid contractor workmanship warranty to go with it.
Best for: homeowners who want a longer non-prorated materials period at a reasonable price. IKO Dynasty is also a good match for Middle Georgia’s wind and heat.
GAF
GAF is the largest shingle maker in North America. Its standard warranty includes 10 years of Smart Choice Protection. The enhanced System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge warranties extend material coverage up to 50 years non-prorated and cover tear-off when needed. Silver Pledge adds 10 to 15 years of workmanship coverage and requires a GAF Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor. Golden Pledge adds 25 or more years of workmanship coverage and requires a Master Elite contractor plus at least five qualifying GAF accessories.
Best for: homeowners who want the manufacturer, not just the roofer, standing behind the installation, and who hire a GAF Master Elite contractor.
CertainTeed
CertainTeed’s standard SureStart period is 10 years on most architectural shingles, with longer periods on some premium lines. SureStart PLUS 3-, 4- and 5-Star warranties extend coverage up to 50 years. The 4-Star tier adds 15 years of workmanship coverage and the 5-Star tier adds 30 years, but only through CertainTeed-credentialed contractors, with the top tier limited to its highest credential level.
Best for: homeowners who want a premium look (Landmark Pro, Grand Manor) and are hiring a CertainTeed-credentialed contractor.
Owens Corning
Owens Corning’s standard TRU PROtection non-prorated period is 10 years on most architectural lines, like Duration. System Protection extends material coverage up to 50 years through Preferred or Platinum contractors. Preferred Protection adds 10 years of workmanship coverage, and Platinum Protection adds 25 years of full workmanship coverage but requires an Owens Corning Platinum contractor. These enhanced warranties require several Owens Corning system components.
Best for: homeowners who like Duration’s SureNail strip and color options and are hiring an Owens Corning Preferred or Platinum contractor.
What actually matters more than the brand
- Who installs it. Most roof failures come from installation, not defective shingles. A manufacturer warranty only covers workmanship if you bought one of the top tiers through a certified contractor. Otherwise, the roofer’s own workmanship warranty is your protection.
- Registration. Most enhanced warranties have to be registered within a set window after installation (IKO’s is 90 days). If your roofer never registers it, you don’t have it.
- Accessories. Enhanced warranties require the manufacturer’s matching underlayment, starter strip, hip-and-ridge caps and other components. Mixing brands can void the extended coverage.
- Transferability. If you might sell, check how many times the warranty transfers and how coverage changes afterward. That matters a lot in a military town like Warner Robins, where families PCS every few years.
- Get it in writing. Ask for the exact warranty name (“Extended Iron Clad,” “Golden Pledge,” “SureStart PLUS 4-Star,” “Platinum Protection”) on your contract, not just “lifetime warranty.”

Frequently asked questions
Which shingle brand has the best warranty?
On paper, the top-tier enhanced warranties from GAF (Golden Pledge), CertainTeed (SureStart PLUS 5-Star) and Owens Corning (Platinum Protection) offer the most coverage, because they include manufacturer-backed workmanship. They’re only available through each brand’s top certified contractors. Among warranties available through more contractors, IKO’s Extended Iron Clad Protection provides up to 25 years of non-prorated materials coverage.
Is a “lifetime” shingle warranty really lifetime?
Partly. “Limited lifetime” usually means coverage lasts as long as the original owner owns the home. Only the first 10 to 25 years (the non-prorated period) are paid in full. After that, coverage is prorated, so the manufacturer pays a shrinking share of the cost.
Do shingle warranties cover installation mistakes?
Standard manufacturer warranties don’t. Workmanship is covered only by the top enhanced warranties (like GAF Silver and Golden Pledge, CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 4- and 5-Star, and Owens Corning Preferred and Platinum Protection) or by your roofer’s own workmanship warranty.
What is IKO Extended Iron Clad Protection?
It’s IKO’s enhanced limited warranty, available only through IKO ROOFPRO Select and Craftsman Premier contractors. It extends the non-prorated Iron Clad Protection period on qualifying installs to up to 25 years. It requires at least three IKO PROFORMAX accessories and registration within 90 days of installation.
Are roof warranties transferable when I sell my house?
Most are transferable, but the terms change. Transfers are often limited to one time, and coverage may shrink or become prorated after a set number of years. Check the specific warranty before you list.
