Architectural Shingles

Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt shingles are the standard residential roofing material across Warner Robins and Middle Georgia — they cover 80%+ of the homes we work on. There are two main asphalt shingle types:

3-tab shingles — the older, lighter, less expensive option. Flat profile, lower wind rating, 15-20 year typical lifespan. Once standard, now mostly used on budget builds or temporary repairs.

Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminated) — the modern standard. Multi-layer construction, dimensional profile that mimics the look of slate or wood shake, higher wind rating, longer warranty (typically 30-50 years prorated). This is what we install on 95% of Warner Robins replacements.

Architectural vs. 3-Tab Shingles

For most Middle Georgia homes, architectural shingles win on every metric that matters — lifespan, wind rating, hail resistance, and resale value. The cost difference vs. 3-tab is typically only $0.50-$1.50 per square foot, but the lifespan difference is often double or more.

Architectural shingles also handle Georgia summer heat better and resist algae and moss growth more effectively than 3-tab. The dimensional look adds curb appeal that 3-tab simply cannot match.

The Four Manufacturers We Install

We install architectural shingles from the four major manufacturers. Each has its own strengths:

GAF — North America’s largest shingle manufacturer. Their Timberline HDZ line is the most-installed architectural shingle in the country. GAF Master Elite certified contractors can offer the Golden Pledge warranty.

Owens Corning — known for their Duration line with SureNail Technology for better wind resistance. Their Duration Storm shingle is Class 4 impact-rated.

CertainTeed — premium line includes Landmark and Landmark Pro with heavier weight and longer warranties. SELECT ShingleMaster certified contractors can offer extended warranties.

IKO — strong value option with the Dynasty and Cambridge lines. Good performance at a competitive price point.

What to Look for in an Architectural Shingle

When picking an architectural shingle, the factors that matter:

  • Wind rating — minimum 110 mph for Middle Georgia, 130 mph if your home sits in an exposed location
  • Impact rating — Class 4 (UL 2218) is the highest impact rating; recommended in known hail zones like Byron and the I-75 corridor
  • Algae resistance — Georgia’s humidity drives algae growth fast; look for shingles with built-in algae-resistant copper granules
  • Warranty length — standard is 30 years prorated; premium lines offer 50-year or lifetime warranties
  • Weight — heavier shingles (240+ lbs per square) generally last longer and look more dimensional
  • Wind warranty — verify the wind warranty matches the rating; some manufacturers limit it to 60-80 mph unless you upgrade

How to Choose

Most Warner Robins homeowners don’t need to overthink the shingle decision. The framework that works for 95% of our installs:

Budget-conscious replacement: GAF Timberline HDZ or Owens Corning Duration — both standard architectural lines with 30-year warranties and 130 mph wind ratings. Excellent value.

Storm-prone area or recent hail history: Upgrade to Class 4 impact-rated. GAF Armor Shield II or Owens Corning Duration Storm. May qualify for an insurance discount.

Premium look + long-term ownership: CertainTeed Landmark Pro or GAF Timberline UHDZ. Heavier shingle, longer warranty, more dimensional profile.

On every inspection we walk you through the options that fit your home, your budget, and how long you plan to stay. No upselling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do architectural shingles last in Middle Georgia?

Most architectural shingles in Warner Robins last 25-35 years depending on weather exposure, ventilation, and quality of install. Premium lines (CertainTeed Landmark Pro, GAF Timberline UHDZ) can push 40+. The Middle Georgia heat shortens lifespan slightly vs cooler climates, so installing on a properly ventilated roof matters more here than most places.

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost over 3-tab?

Almost always yes. The cost difference is typically $0.50-$1.50 per square foot, but architectural shingles last 50-100% longer, carry double the wind warranty, and have substantially better curb appeal at resale. For most Middle Georgia homes, the per-year cost is actually lower than 3-tab.

Which architectural shingle brand do you recommend?

For most Warner Robins roofs we recommend GAF Timberline HDZ or Owens Corning Duration — best balance of warranty, look, and price. For homes in hail-prone areas (Byron, I-75 corridor), we recommend a Class 4 impact-rated upgrade. We install all four major brands so we have no incentive to push one over the others.

What wind rating do I need for Middle Georgia?

Minimum 110 mph for residential, but we recommend 130 mph for any home in an open or exposed location. Tornado warnings happen here several times per year and sustained 60-80 mph straight-line winds are common during summer thunderstorms.

Do architectural shingles come with a warranty?

Yes — every architectural shingle comes with a manufacturer warranty (typically 30 years prorated, sometimes 50 years or lifetime for premium lines). Plus our 10-year workmanship warranty covers installation defects. We register the manufacturer warranty for you after install.

How much does an architectural shingle roof cost?

A typical Warner Robins architectural shingle replacement runs $4.50-$8.50 per square foot installed. For a 2,000 sqft home that is roughly $9,000-$17,000 out the door. Class 4 impact-rated upgrades add 10-15%. Premium brand upgrades (CertainTeed Pro, GAF UHDZ) add another 5-10%.
